(Under Construction)NOTE: The research on this CLIETT line is an on-going venture that began August 2000 when Tom E. CLIETT contacted Phyls Esparza and David Roberts about his grandmother, Tennessee "Tennie" Roberts WINGATE via the internet. Tennie Roberts WINGATE was the daughter of "Joshua M. ROBERTS" and Minerva SHERRON. Tennie ROBERTS married Isaac Newton WINGATE 13 Nov 1889 in Hill Co, TX. Tennie's and Isaac's daughter, Mollie WINGATE, married Hugh Maurice CLIETT, son of Hugh Posey CLIETT and Mary Jeannette CUPP , 26 Dec 1913 in Peoria, Hill Co, TX. Hugh and Mollie were the parents of Tom. Peter Quin CLIETT (by Thomas Edwin CLIETT, great-grandson of Peter Quin CLIETT) Peter QUIN CLIETT was the eighth child of Thomas Harvey CLIETT and Edilda Henry QUIN. According to his obituary he was born 15 Oct 1844 in Cherokee County, Georgia (It should have read Cherokee County, Alabama: TC). He had six brothers and three sisters and four half brothers and three half-sisters. Peter moved to Caldwell County, Texas with his parents in late 1859 from Oktibbeha or Chickasaw County, Mississippi when he was about 15 years old. Peter served in the Civil War as a volunteer in K Company, 32nd Regiment, Texas Cavalry. Two of his brothers, Anson and Albert, served in the same company from June, 1863 until Feb., 1864, both of whom were killed in the war. Records researched so far have not shown where or when Anson and Albert were killed but Peter was still on the company rolls, and listed as sick, in March, 1865 which was shortly before the end of the war. Two other brothers died in the war, Hugh Losson CLIETT and Harvey Bailey CLIETT. Hugh was a volunteer in Sibley’s Brigade and died about the first of July, 1862 during their retreat from New Mexico enroute to San Antonio, Texas. Information related to Harvey has not been researched. Very little information has been developed about Peter QUIN CLIETT between the end of the Civil War and 1868. On 07 Jan 1868 he married Laura Catherine POSEY in what is believed to have been a double wedding. On that same date his half-brother, Nathan Marion CLIETT, married Sarah Emma POSEY, half-sister of Laura Catherine. In 1874 Peter QUIN CLIETT moved his wife and three children, Hugh POSEY CLIETT, Emma Elizabeth CLIETT and Florence Viola CLIETT, to Peoria, Hill County Texas where he began farming and acquiring farm land. He eventually was the owner of about 1,400 acres in addition to city property in Hillsboro, about six miles east of Peoria. Eventually, in 1907, he moved his family to Hillsboro. While living at Peoria, Peter served as Deacon at the Peoria Baptist Church. When they moved to Hillsboro they moved their membership to the First Baptist Church in that city. The Peoria community was an important and integral part in the lives of Peter QUIN CLIETT and his descendants. Peoria began as a resting place for travelers and cattle herds and in the 1840s had twenty-one log huts. In 1856 a post office was opened and by 1878 the population was 500. At one time Peoria had a steam gristmill, a cotton gin, five churches, two schools, daily stages to Hillsboro and Whitney, a Masonic lodge, three brickyards, hotels and boarding houses. In 1890 the railroad was routed through Hillsboro and the Peoria population began to decline. In 1980 there were only two general stores and a population of eighty-one. In 1874, when Peter QUIN CLIETT and his family moved from Caldwell County, Peoria was a thriving farming and stock-raising community as well as a growing commercial area. During and after the decline in population the community retained its farm and ranch economic base. 1850 Census of Oktibbeha Co, MS p.282; 366/366 Thomas H. CLIETT 52 m M.B.
