Henry KRAUSE was born 29 April 1851 in the villiage of Pritter, Prussia (Germany). At age 14 he became a sailor and remained in the service seven years. He landed in New Orleans in 1872 when he quit the sea. (from obit of Henry Crowsey) (received the following transcribed letter via e-mail from Penny Gardner 31 May 2002. The letter was written by Ruth Crowsey Cox to Carol Gardner Wells in 1982.) "Grandpa Crowsey came from Pritter, Prussia. ( they call it Germany, now) One of the things he had to do in school every day was learn a chapter of the Bible by heart, and recite it. He left Prussia when he was 14, and became a sailor. For 7 years he worked like that, and then he came to America. He spelled his name Krause. He got picked up by the authorities twice and sent back to Prussia. After that, a schoolteacher in America told him he should change his name to Crowsey. so he wouldn't get picked up, and he did. His brother, Gus, came here later, but he didn't change his name. He met Mary Agnes (Delisle) Booker, probably in Missouri. She was a widow woman with three kids, Will, Frank and Missouri. Her husband, Will, had died with pneumonia, just before their daughter, Missouri was born. So Grandma had to go live with her folks, and did all the housework, and the ironing and cooking. There were 3 sisters and a brother and her mother living there, but she had to do all the work. I never heard her mention her father, guess he was dead by then. Grandpa was courting a woman named Celia Delisle. Her sister was Mary Agnes, but most folks just called her Agnes. I think their folks came from France. The woman that grandpa was boarding with, told him, "Henry, You are courting the wrong girl, you should be courting the widow. She's a real good cook." So he said, "Me go see de widow." He never could speak English real good, and always said, "de" and "dem" for "the" and "them". Grandpa helped her carry her buckets of water from the creek. He said he liked her, but she told him, "Henry, you are a good man, but one thing I don't like about you, is you curse too much." He said that was the way he learned the language, and he didn't know that was cursing. He said he would try not to, and she said okay. After awhile they fell in love and got married. They moved into a big one room log cabin with a big fireplace. Grandpa only had $8 in his pocket, and had a wife and three children to take care of. They were happy though, and she was glad to get away from all the folks. Grandma was a lot taller than Grandpa. Grandma was a big woman, ( I think Ruby took after her) She weighed about 280 pounds most of the time, and she was the best cook ever. She cooked 5 meals a day for Grandpa. After they married, they had 7 children. My dad, Albert Henry, the oldest. The others were, Minnie May, Addie Anne, Thomas Eustach, Lewis Harvey and Myrtle Sangster Crowsey. Little Georgie died when he was a child. Don't know for sure where he fit in, maybe he was next to Uncle Tom. That's about all I can tell you right now, Carol. Love, your Aunt Ruth
