(NOTE: The research on WILLIAM ROBERTS is on-going and very little has been found on his life before or during his short life in Texas. Except for a few internet cousins I have not come across anyone researching this Roberts line. William and Andrew ROBERTS were "Old 300" colonist in Stephen Austin's first colony in Texas.) (David Roberts Jan 2001) Rev.13 Sep 2003
The first census of Austin's Colony 1826 reflects the following:
William ROBERTS p.11 Married, age over 50, farmer and stockraiser Wife, Peggy, age over 50 One male child, age 16-25 One Servant
Andrew ROBERTS p.11 Married, age 25-40, farmer and stockraiser Wife, Sally, age 16-25 One male child, age 0-7 Four female children, age 0-7 The one male child's (listed under William) name is unknown and died before 1833.
Elizabeth "Betsy" ROBERTS, daughter of William and (?) was born about 1785 per census records. More on Betsy can be found in the "Cornelius SMITH" narrative.
Andrew ROBERTS, son of William and (?) Roberts was born before 1800 perhaps in Kentucky as his sister, Betsy, was listed in the 1850 census as being born in KY. Andrew's age is unkown. His first marriage was to Sally (?) circa 1819 and second to Cynthia HODGE circa 1828. Cynthia was the daughter Archibald HODGE and Charlotte REEVES. Archibald was the son of Old 300 colonist, Alexander HODGE. Andrew's immediate family was as follows:
1 William Roberts, b. 1755 to 1765; d. spring of 1826 ----+Peggy, b. abt.1770; d. 1832 ------2 Elizabeth, b. abt. 1785; died August 31, 1859 --------+Cornelius Smith ------2 Andrew, b. before1800; died August 19, 1844 --------+(1st) Sally, d. abt. 1830 -----------3 Son (per 1826 census of Austin’s colony) -----------3 Daughter (per 1826 census of Austin's colony) -----------3 Mary, b. 1820; -------------+John Pickett -------------+(2nd) Abner Harris -----------3 Martha, b.1825; d. abt. 1850 -------------+John Peveyhouse -----------3 Margaret, b. 1824; d. 1846; m. William ROBERTS cannot be found in a census (with certainty) before his arrival in Texas (Mexico). There is a William ROBERTS in the 1799 and 1800 tax roll of Pulaski Co., KY. He is taxed on 100 acres and his source of water is from Sinking Creek. He is not listed in the 1810 census of Pulaski Co. His daughter, Elizabeth, did marry Cornelius SMITH in Pulaski Co, Kentucky, in 1808. Cornelius can be found in the 1810 Pulaski County census, William cannot. Cornelius is not listed in the 1820 census. William was in Texas by 1824.
The only plausible marriage record found to date is William ROBERTS marrying Margaret ADMIRE Sep 1793 in Rowan Co, NC. If this is the correct William then it would be a second marriage and not the mother of Betsy or Andrew. The Cornelius SMITH clan was living in Rowan Co at this time. The Smith clan left Rowan Co, NC, in 1805.
William ROBERTS' land grant of one league and labor (4,605.5 acres) was surveyed 8 July 1824. Six months (27/28 December) later William sold 1/2 of his league of land to son Andrew for $127.00 and the other 1/2 to his son-in-law Cornelius SMITH for $150.00. The actual acreage according to land records found at the Brazoria County courthouse was 5,312.12. The following from Spanish Archives was found at the Brazoria County courthouse:
