WILLIAM and ANDREW ROBERTS

by David Roberts
(NOTE: The research on WILLIAM ROBERTS is on-going and very little has been found on his life before or during his short life in Texas. Except for a few internet cousins I have not come across anyone researching this Roberts line. William and Andrew ROBERTS were "Old 300" colonist in Stephen Austin's first colony in Texas.) (David Roberts Jan 2001) Rev.13 Sep 2003

The first census of Austin's Colony 1826 reflects the following:
William ROBERTS p.11
Married, age over 50, farmer and stockraiser
Wife, Peggy, age over 50
One male child, age 16-25
One Servant

Andrew ROBERTS p.11
Married, age 25-40, farmer and stockraiser
Wife, Sally, age 16-25
One male child, age 0-7
Four female children, age 0-7

The one male child's (listed under William) name is unknown and died before 1833.

Elizabeth "Betsy" ROBERTS, daughter of William and (?) was born about 1785 per census records. More on Betsy can be found in the "
Cornelius SMITH" narrative.

Andrew ROBERTS, son of William and (?) Roberts was born before 1800 perhaps in Kentucky as his sister, Betsy, was listed in the 1850 census as being born in KY. Andrew's age is unkown. His first marriage was to Sally (?) circa 1819 and second to Cynthia HODGE circa 1828. Cynthia was the daughter Archibald HODGE and Charlotte REEVES. Archibald was the son of Old 300 colonist, Alexander HODGE. Andrew's immediate family was as follows:

 1 William Roberts, b. 1755 to 1765; d. spring of 1826
 ----+Peggy, b. abt.1770; d. 1832
 ------2 Elizabeth, b. abt. 1785; died August 31, 1859

William ROBERTS cannot be found in a census (with certainty) before his arrival in Texas (Mexico). There is a William ROBERTS in the 1799 and 1800 tax roll of Pulaski Co., KY. He is taxed on 100 acres and his source of water is from Sinking Creek. He is not listed in the 1810 census of Pulaski Co. His daughter, Elizabeth, did marry Cornelius SMITH in Pulaski Co, Kentucky, in 1808. Cornelius can be found in the 1810 Pulaski County census, William cannot. Cornelius is not listed in the 1820 census. William was in Texas by 1824.

The only plausible marriage record found to date is William ROBERTS marrying Margaret ADMIRE Sep 1793 in Rowan Co, NC. If this is the correct William then it would be a second marriage and not the mother of Betsy or Andrew. The Cornelius SMITH clan was living in Rowan Co at this time. The Smith clan left Rowan Co, NC, in 1805.

William ROBERTS' land grant of one league and labor (4,605.5 acres) was surveyed 8 July 1824. Six months (27/28 December) later William sold 1/2 of his league of land to son Andrew for $127.00 and the other 1/2 to his son-in-law Cornelius SMITH for $150.00. The actual acreage according to land records found at the Brazoria County courthouse was 5,312.12. The following from Spanish Archives was found at the Brazoria County courthouse:

Andrew ROBERTS was a member of the 1829 Militia, serving under James B. BAILEY of Brazoria County. He was on the camp roster at Velasco, Brazoria Co, 25 June 1832, participating in the Battle of Velasco. He lived on the Brazos River at the west side of the 1/2 league of land purchased from his father, William ROBERTS. No marriage records have been found for either of his two marriages. His first marriage to Sally may have been in the Missouri Territory and his second marriage to Cynthia HODGE may have been in Fort Bend County, TX.

The ancestry or maiden name of Andrew ROBERTS' first spouse, SALLY, has yet to be found. From probate and census records their children are recorded and as follows:
Mary ROBERTS, daughter of Andrew and Sally ROBERTS, was born about 1820 place unknown. She married first John R. PICKETT. No marriage record has been found. John was an original land owner in Brazoria Co receiving 1 league and 1 labor. No record of children exist to this union. By 1840 Abner HARRIS was appointed administrator of John's estate. Abner HARRIS, Old 300 colonist, married Mary PICKETT 22 Nov 1837 in Brazoria Co. Abner and Mary had the following children:
----Harriet HARRIS, b.1843; m.Theophilos NOEL
----Abner HARRIS Jr, b.1845; m.Ana GAY
----Mary HARRIS, b.1847; married W. McKINNEY
Mary ROBERTS HARRIS died intestate in Guadalupe Co in 1848. Abner died before 1850. Their children, Harriet, Abner and Mary were living with their guardian, Arnold W. LAY, and listed in the 1850 Guadalupe Co, TX, census.

Margaret ROBERTS, daughter of Andrew and Sally ROBERTS, was born about 1822. She married Abner HODGE 23 Jan 1839 in Brazoria Co. Margaret and Abner had the following children:
----Thomas HODGE, b. 6 Jun 1842 in Brazoria Co; d.16 Jul 1922
----Edward W HODGE, b.about 1846
Margaret ROBERTS HODGE died before 1847 when Abner HODGE married Elba ROSE 24 May 1846 in Brazoria Co. Abner HODGE and family moved to Limestone Co.

Martha ROBERTS, daughter of Andrew and Sally ROBERTS, was born about 1824. She married John PEVEHOUSE about 1840. Martha and John had the following children:
----Preston PEVEHOUSE, b.1 Oct 1841; d.10 Feb 1890 (listed in 1850 Navarro Co census)
----Sarah PEVEHOUSE, b.20 Dec 1843 Ft.Bend Co ; d.23 Feb 1915 Erath Co (listed in 1850 Navarro Co census)
----Rachael PEVEHOUSE, b.abt.1845; d.abt.1865 (listed in 1850 Navarro Co census)
----Nelson PEVEHOUSE, b.20 May 1846; d.16 Feb 1887 (listed in 1850 Navarro Co census)
----Mary PEVEHOUSE, b.19 Mar 1849; d.13 Jun 1895 (listed in 1850Navarro Co census)
----Enoch PEVEHOUSE, b.abt.1851 (not listed in the 1850 Navarro Co census)
Martha ROBERTS PEVEHOUSE died before 1852 when John married Kezziah PETTY 16 Jun 1852 in Navarro Co. (John and Kizziah had three children; Elizabeth b. 18 Aug 1856, David John b.Jul 1858 and William Petty b. 1852)

Daughter (Sally?)

Son ?

Andrew ROBERTS second marriage was to Cynthia HODGE, daughter of Archibald and Charlotte HODGE. A marriage record has not been found. Andrew and Cynthia had the following children:
Sarah C. ROBERTS, b.1834; d.after 1880; m.1st John JONES, 2nd Quinton H. VANN.
John ROBERTS, b.1832 in Brazoria Co; d. 1851
Joel Walter ROBERTS, b.2 May 1837 in Brazoria Co; d.23 Jan 1920 in Quanah, Hardeman Co, TX
Abner ROBERTS, b.1840 Brazoria Co.; d.1864 Civil War in VA
Archibald ROBERTS, b.1846 in Brazoria Co; d.1848 in Brazoria Co

Andrew ROBERTS received title to a league and labor of land in what is now Fort Bend County on May 11, 1827. Andrew had land in Fort Bend Co, Gonzales Co and Brazoria Co. He evidently lived only in Brazoria Co. The 1840 tax rolls of Brazoria Co listed Andrew as having title to 2,214 acres and 177 acres not yet patented. It also listed him owning 6 slaves, 10 horses, 325 cattle and 1 wooden clock.
