                                ( page 1)

                                                                Mariposa Co, Cal-

                                                Saturday June 2nd 1855

                                Dear brother

                                                Your highly esteemed favor

of April 9th was received a week or two

ago which gave me great pleasure to hear

from you all and to know that you were

all enjoying of good health. I am permited

by the goodness of an Alwise Creator that

I am enjoying of good health.

News of our county is another of an exciting

nature.  Mining is down to the lowest ebb

and the farmers has nearly all caved in.

Prices of all commodities has depreciated

nearly one third since you left.

The weather for the past few days has been

quite warm. You wished to know how those

hombres come out that was indicted for Phili-

                                bustering against our County Jail.

They all were acquitted and should have

                                received appointments to high and

responsible offices. The last month has

been a month of blood and crime about

the time of my last. John C Donalson

and another man were killed in their

camp up from the Joaquin. Donalson’s

                                brothers were both from home.

                                ( page 2)

I saw Archibald Donalson last Wednesday

he said they had not got no clue to the

murderers and also said that he and his

brother were going to start home in a week

or two. About Coulters there has been 15 or 16

men murdered and four men hung by the

mob & last Wednesday a Mexican was

hung by the law for highway robbery. I was at the

Execution when the trap was cut from under

him. The not sliped under his chin and

he struggled violently for about 15 minutes.

I thought my conscience was as hard as steel

but when I saw the prisoner standing on the

trap and the weapon drawn to sever the rope to

launch him into Eternity it is enough to

soften the heart of the most hardest and

obdurate. If there were to be one hundred hung

I would never go to see another.

R B Stinson and Capt Barker are about Carson.

Mr Stinson is a candidate for the office of

Sheriff. William Guard is a candidate for

the office of County Clerk with a fair prospect

of being elected. In some of your former

communication you mentioned about some of the

fair sex said they would like to see me back.

You will please say to them it is my intention

to become a citizen of California, but if

they will meet on the half way ground

                                (page 3)

that I will meet them there with the proper

officer and there and then they can become

my bride if they choose.  An old gentleman and

his family are living in 50 yds of me with one

of the handsomest girls this side of Old

Nevada. The have a lot of milk cows

I get what milk I want free of cost but

they rather stick to me in the butter line

at about 75 cts per lb. Who cares for 75 cts when

they can feast their eyes up from the lovly

features of Venus. I shall move my camp

in a few days. God only knows where. I have

sold to the Chinese and will start

Monday to look for some other place.

May prosperity attend you all and the

Blessing of God rest and abide with you forever

Is the prays of your brother.
